17-year-old arrested in Zhytomyr metadon poisoning of soldiers
Two servicemen died, four more people were saved after postal drugs were used.
Police in Zhytomyr region arrested a 17-year-old girl suspected of helping Russia’s FSB poison Ukrainian servicemen with methadone. Two soldiers died, while four others survived the alleged attack, Ukraine’s National Police said.
The suspect allegedly carried out the orders of a Russian handler. She packaged drugs, then sent them by post disguised as “free gifts,” including using fake sender details.
Investigators said the scheme targeted Ukrainian military personnel found via Telegram. After the parcels were delivered, recipients were allegedly told to swallow the contents of the capsules on camera, without knowing they contained a lethal dose of methadone.
The police inquiry traced the deaths of two servicemen in Zhytomyr region and identified other people who received similar parcels. That led to preventing further killings that investigators say could have happened in Kirovohrad, Zaporizhzhia, Chernivtsi and Ivano-Frankivsk regions.
The 17-year-old has been informed of suspicion of aiding intentional murder of two people by prior conspiracy, and of illegal shipment of narcotic and psychotropic substances for the purpose of sale. If convicted, she faces up to 15 years in prison. Police said the investigation is also checking her possible involvement in other crimes.
She is in custody as the case is being investigated.
