Netherlands offers 2 million euros to arrest narcotics fugitive Jos Leijdekkers
Europol lists the fugitive, sentenced in absentia to 24 years in the Netherlands and 79 years in Belgium.
The Netherlands is offering a record 2 million euros for information leading to the arrest of Jos Leijdekkers, one of Europe’s most-wanted narcotics traffickers.
Dutch prosecutors said the man, also known as "Jos le joufflu," is currently believed to be in Sierra Leone, where he has a relationship with the daughter of President Julius Maada Bio.
Leijdekkers appears on Europol’s list of top wanted people. Dutch authorities say his arrest is their top priority.
In the Netherlands, a tribunal in Rotterdam condemned Leijdekkers by contumacy to 24 years in prison for his role in international cocaine trafficking, including ordering a murder and arranging cocaine transports. He was also sentenced in Belgium in several drug-trafficking cases, with a total prison term of 79 years.
The prosecutors said the reward was multiplied by ten and is intended for anyone who helps locate him. They pointed to practical tips such as his movements and possible moments when he could be arrested, including when he is outside Sierra Leone.
Leijdekkers remains at large, and he has been condemned in absentia in both countries as Dutch and international efforts continue.
