25 people detained in Lisbon after Rossio housing protest police action
Accused of disobedience, they were freed but must appear in court on Monday.
Police in Lisbon released 25 people detained after an intervention at the Rossio during a housing protest, with many required to present themselves to a court on Monday.
The arrests followed two police operations in Lisbon and Porto, ordered at 00:30 and carried out by the PSP after concentrations were not dispersed as ordered. The police intervention by the Unidade Especial de Polícia began around 02:00.
PSP said there were seven injuries and 31 arrests for disobedience. The Acampada de Lisboa, in a post on Instagram, claimed dozens of protesters were injured, with more than 20 taken to Hospital de São José and others treated on site.
One of those detained, Filipe, 32, told CMTV he was caught “in the place wrong, at the wrong time” because he was speaking with friends near the fountain between police and protesters, after the protest activity had moved away. He said he was held for close to six hours and was released with instructions to present himself in court on Monday at 13:30.
As of Monday, the detainees were no longer in police custody, but they must appear before the tribunal as scheduled.
