A 29-year-old man was temporarily detained in Bergisch Gladbach after shop theft from a supermarket, police said. The incident happened on Wednesday, 21.10., at around 17:00 on Refrather Weg. A store loss prevention officer watched on video as the suspect removed security-tagged items from the display, opened them with a tool, and hid the goods under his clothing. The moment he tried to leave the shop, the detective alerted officers. Police intercepted him and took him to the staff area. During a search, officers found four bottles of spirits, two headphones, and a smartwatch with a total value in the low three-digit range. The tool used in the theft was also seized. The man has appeared in police records multiple times for similar offences and has no fixed place of residence. He told officers he financed his living and his drug addiction through thefts. A criminal complaint was filed for theft with a weapon. The suspect was taken into police custody and is due to be presented to a custody judge the same day.
