29-year-old suspected of murder sits in pre-trial custody in Osterode
Police say a 37-year-old was shot dead at about 1.20am.
A 29-year-old man suspected of murder is in pre-trial custody after a man was found shot dead in Osterode in the Landkreis Göttingen area, police said.
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday in Osterode and has been held since Wednesday afternoon in the Rosdorf detention centre. A judge ordered investigation detention due to the seriousness of the alleged offence and because there is said to be a flight risk.
Police and prosecutors are investigating the case as murder. The suspect has not, so far, commented on the allegations.
Investigators from a homicide unit say the suspect knew the 37-year-old victim. How the killing happened, the motive and the background have not been published. The death was confirmed after a body was found, and an autopsy showed the victim was shot.
Police believe the killing took place around 1.20am on the night to Saturday. The victim was from Herzberg in the Landkreis Göttingen.
A woman pedestrian reported the body around 3am. She said it was lying on a path between green areas where vehicles are not allowed. Officers sealed off the area around the discovery site and interviewed residents in the surrounding area.
Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone who saw suspicious people or vehicles in the Am Röddenberg and Freiheiter Straße area, or heard unusual noises, in the night to Saturday should contact police on (05522) 50 80.
The investigation by the homicide commission is ongoing, with the suspect still in custody pending further proceedings.
