51 Albanian police officers injured as 65 protesters detained
Authorities say masked attackers hurled stones and Molotov cocktails for over 14 hours.
Fifty-one police officers were injured during a violent protest in Albania, authorities said, while 65 participants were taken in for questioning over suspected attacks.
Albanian State Police said masked protesters threw stones and hard objects and used Molotov cocktails during a demonstration that officers faced for more than 14 hours.
State Police Director General Skender Hita visited the Trauma Hospital to check on the injured officers. He praised officers’ professionalism, restraint and sense of responsibility during the sustained attacks and said he would support them and the institution he leads.
Hospital management and medical staff told Hita that officers with more serious injuries would remain hospitalized and were receiving treatment.
Police said 65 people involved in the demonstration were detained for further procedural actions as of the time of the statement. They are suspected of attacking police officers as well as public institutions and public and private property. Legal proceedings will continue to identify everyone allegedly involved and bring those responsible to justice.
