A 62-year-old man was detained by the GNR on 12 October for suspected violence against his 47-year-old ex-companion in Alter do Chão. The GNR Territorial Command in Portalegre says the arrest was carried out by the NIAVE, following an investigation into alleged physical and psychological violence. Police carried out the operation under warrants including a detention order, a home search warrant and a non-home search. A weapon of prohibited possession was seized. The man was brought before the Tribunal Judicial de Fronteira and had several coercive measures imposed. He must provide a term of identity and residence, is banned from contacting the victim directly or indirectly, and is prohibited from approaching or staying near the victim’s home and workplace within a 500-metre perimeter. The 500-metre restriction will be monitored using remote control technical means with an electronic wristband. He was also ordered not to acquire or use weapons of any kind, and not to have objects or utensils specifically suited to facilitate criminal activity. The case is ongoing, with the accused under the court-ordered measures while the investigation continues.
