Police arrest suspect in $75M international crime network in Bangkok
Thai authorities say the network moved more than 500 million yuan and used 133 accounts.
Thai police arrested a 37-year-old Chinese man wanted by authorities in China over alleged involvement in an international crime network and money laundering.
Investigators said the network handled more than 500 million yuan, about $75 million, through cryptocurrency and foreign-currency exchanges across more than 133 accounts.
Police alleged the suspect helped arrange visas for members of international crime groups tied to other money-laundering cases. They also claimed he tried to evade arrest by using forged documents to report his residence and by changing vehicle registration plates before police tracked him down.
Officers found him at a luxury house in Bangkok. His Thai visa had expired more than three years ago, and he will face legal proceedings as authorities coordinate his return to China to answer an outstanding warrant.
Cointelegraph previously reported that Coinbase froze more than $3 million in cryptocurrency tied to a global operation targeting cyber-enabled crypto scam networks in Southeast Asia.
The Thai arrest is underway as police prepare the next steps before his coordinated return to China.
