A 31-year-old driver was arrested after being involved in an accident on Portugal’s A2 motorway in Palmela, after an alcohol test showed 4.69 g/l in his blood. The crash happened at kilometre 28.7 on the A2, in the South-North direction. After the incident, the man was tested and returned a result close to 9.4 times higher than the legal limit of 0.5 g/l for most drivers. He was detained by the National Republican Guard (GNR), specifically its road unit, on suspicion of the crime of driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. After the arrest, he was taken to the Judicial Court of Setúbal for summary proceedings. The GNR said the effects of alcohol at the wheel can impair reaction, motor coordination and risk assessment, increasing the chance of road accidents and the seriousness of their consequences.
