An MP remains in custody in the Netherlands after two bail applications were rejected, as his extradition case heads to a key hearing on Nov. 18. Ohene Kwame Frimpong, Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, was arrested at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on May 10, 2026, after arriving from Ghana. The arrest followed a request for extradition from the United States tied to allegations of romance scams and money laundering. Parliament confirmed his detention and engaged Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said consular assistance was being provided, including a visit to the MP while he was held. His lawyers argued that the US warrant issued by a magistrate court was meant for questioning and did not contain formal criminal charges. Nevertheless, the MP’s legal team failed to secure release, with both an initial bail application and a subsequent appeal turned down. Majority Chief Whip and South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, said Frimpong has not been transferred to the United States and that extradition proceedings are still ongoing in the Netherlands. The upcoming hearing on Nov. 18 is expected to determine whether the legal requirements for transfer to the US have been met. Frimpong remains in custody as the extradition process continues, with no conviction recorded in the case described.
