Albanian fugitive Valentin Ftoni arrested in New York after 25 years
He was wanted for the 2000 murders of a husband and wife and more.
Valentin Ftoni, an Albanian fugitive wanted over a blood feud linked to multiple homicides, has been arrested in New York after more than 25 years on the run.
Ftoni was sought in Albania to serve a 25-year sentence connected to the 2000 murders of a husband and wife. Albanian authorities also want him for one further murder and named him as the main suspect in a fourth.
U.S. Marshals arrested Ftoni on Thursday in coordination with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after an INTERPOL alert.
In August, the U.S. Marshals Service launched a search for Ftoni in the United States based on details provided by INTERPOL Tirana. Multiple U.S. and Albanian agencies determined he had lived in the country under several false names since the early 2000s, mainly in the New York metropolitan region, believed to be tied to an assumed identity from a Central American nation.
The U.S. Marshals Service then sent an investigative lead to a representative assigned to the Homeland Security Task Force in New York. Officers moved quickly to trace Ftoni and apprehend him.
INTERPOL Washington Acting Director Daniel Vizzi praised the cross-border cooperation. Ricky J. Patel, U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of New York, said the arrest followed leads that suggested the multiple-murder fugitive was living in the New York area under assumed identities.
Ftoni was placed in federal custody following his arrest and is being detained pending future immigration proceedings.
