Algerian police arrest 61 Moroccans in Oran over suspected sabotage plots
Authorities say passports were seized after the group allegedly entered via Tunisia.
Police in Algeria have arrested 61 Moroccans in Oran over suspected plans to prepare sabotage acts, authorities said.
The arrests were carried out in connection with a case involving a “criminal international Moroccan network” described as extremely dangerous. Among those detained, police said there was a former member of the Moroccan military.
Authorities said the suspects entered Algeria illegally via Tunisia. They allegedly arrived in Tunis first, then moved through rugged mountain tracks and isolated forest passages in the El Kala region, in the wilaya of El Tarf near the Tunisia border, before traveling to Oran by land.
The operation also led to the seizure of Moroccan passports and money in Moroccan dirhams and euros. The suspects were presented to the public prosecutor near the specialized criminal court in Oran.
Last August, Algerian police announced the arrest of four Moroccans suspected of planning sabotage of the legislative elections scheduled for July 2. The new case follows that earlier probe, with both framed by authorities as part of alleged plots linked to Morocco.
