Police investigate suspected intentional attack after deputy is crushed in Wangaratta
A 43-year-old man was arrested after a Toyota hit the independent MP outside her office.
An Australian independent deputy is in critical condition after being hit by a car and trapped under it outside her office in Wangaratta, police say.
The incident happened at about 15:35 on Monday. The 65-year-old MP, Helen Haines, was taken to hospital with critical injuries after the crash outside the office on Murphy Street.
Police said a white Toyota Land Cruiser struck the woman. When the driver got out, the 43-year-old man was arrested at the scene by a passer-by.
Officers investigating the case also found and seized a knife inside the Toyota. Detectives from the heavy vehicle and serious crash unit were sent to the scene, and they are investigating whether the incident was deliberate. Police said it is still not known whether the driver and the deputy knew each other.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said there is no further threat to the public. He said a large police investigation is under way and confirmed the suspect remains in custody. The Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police, and ASIO are working together, with a joint counter-terrorism team activated, though the motive is not yet known.
