Police arrest 37 people in Baku after school uniform protests
A criminal case was opened under a public order breach article after clashes and damage.
Police in Baku have arrested 37 people after clashes connected to Azerbaijan’s school uniform rules, according to Ukrainian news outlet Ukrinform, citing Azertac.
A criminal case was opened after a group clashed with school staff and damaged educational institutions. The unrest began after a standard school uniform was introduced and clothing deemed contrary to the secular nature of general education was banned.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs said investigators launched proceedings under Article 233 of Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code, which covers organizing actions that contribute to a breach of public order, or actively participating in such actions.
Police said the group grossly violated public order. The ministry also reminded residents of their duty to comply with the law and not violate public order or the rights and interests of others.
The 37 people are under arrest as the criminal investigation continues following the case opened in Baku.
