A 56-year-old border unit officer was exposed for allegedly demanding a bribe of 20,000 hryvnia to help a serviceman get assigned to a border guard unit, in the Uzhhorod area. Prosecutors said the accused was the head of an отдел of a border detachment in Zakarpattia. He allegedly arranged for a serviceman to be considered for a position, then demanded money for “assistance” with the transfer. In May 2026, a senior soldier arrived at the Zakarpattia border detachment after serving in a military unit in central Ukraine. The officer told him he planned to place him in the unit. About a week later, the serviceman received a report to sign for contract service. After that, he was removed from the staff lists of the border detachment and placed under the head of the Main Personnel Training Centre of the State Border Guard Service, where he completed basic military training. After the training, the serviceman was again assigned to the border detachment at the end of August 2026. On 25 September 2026, during a meeting at the officer’s home in the Uzhhorod district, the officer allegedly demanded 20,000 hryvnia from him, but was caught and detained before receiving the money. Under procedural guidance by the Zakarpattia Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in the sphere of defence of the Western region, the deputy commander was notified of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The case is being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation investigators in Lviv, using materials from the Security Service of Ukraine in Zakarpattia, with operational support from the National Police’s Department of State Security Research and support from the internal and own security unit of the State Border Guard Service detachment. The officer has been placed under a court-chosen preventive measure while the pre-trial investigation continues.
