A Canadian man accused of laundering $3.8 million US in stolen cryptocurrency was sentenced to time served by a federal judge in Miami after pleading guilty to the offence. Trenton Richard David, known as Trent Johnston, was arrested in March 2026 in North Miami and remained in custody after the judge sentenced him Monday. According to court documents, U.S. Homeland Security Investigations said Johnston impersonated Google tech support staff and representatives of crypto firms to trick victims into sharing the codes to their cryptocurrency wallets. In one case described in court, Johnston and an unnamed co-conspirator stole 185 bitcoin from a victim in California, an amount prosecutors said was about $13 million US at the time. Investigators said Johnston also lived lavishly, with “extravagant” nightlife while in the Miami area after relocating in 2024. Court documents list high-value purchases including a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, two BMWs, jewelry, and private jet rental. He did not hide his activity, a witness told investigators. The witness said Johnston showed others how he carried out the thefts by sharing his screen over Discord. Johnston was arrested after he was found in the back of a Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV that smelled of “freshly burned marijuana,” according to court documents. Investigators also reported suspected amphetamine tablets in a Hermes bag during the March arrest. Johnston pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. Prosecutors agreed to withdraw a wire fraud conspiracy charge as part of the plea deal. Defense lawyer Brooke C. Watson said Johnston “quickly admitted his conduct” and was “tremendously sorry” for what he had done. Prosecutors said Johnston provided “substantial assistance” in the investigation and prosecution of other unnamed individuals. The case did not end there: Johnston still faces a Florida state drug possession charge linked to the amphetamine pills. It’s also unclear when he will be released from custody, but he already agreed to a removal order and is expected to be handed over to ICE to be deported to Canada.
