Carabinieri arrested three people after an attempted theft of copper cables from a materials depot in Cantalupo nel Sannio. The incident unfolded between November 1 and 2. The depot owner, alerted by a phone-linked video surveillance system, reported that three people were trying to remove cable coils. Police found that the depot fence had been cut to gain access. Inside, the suspects had also damaged a company truck by puncturing its tires, likely to prevent it being used. When they realized they had been discovered, the three fled in a dark, high-powered vehicle. Carabinieri units launched an interception operation with support from other departments, following reports of a dark BMW 5 Series with a foreign, Spanish license plate speeding along SS 17 in the direction of Isernia-Campobasso. The vehicle was stopped after forcing a checkpoint, at kilometer 195+500 of SS 17, near the targeted depot. Officers searched the three men and found tools suitable for forced entry in the car’s trunk. Video images from the depot were analyzed and used to identify the three occupants as the suspected offenders. The three were arrested and taken to the Casa Circondariale of Isernia, pending action by the judicial authority. The case is in the preliminary investigation phase.
