Chinese fugitive faces extradition over mule accounts worth 2.5bn baht
Thai police say 133 accounts moved more than 500 million yuan.
Thai police have arrested a Chinese fugitive in Bangkok accused of overseeing mule bank accounts worth about 2.5 billion baht.
The 37-year-old suspect, identified only as Mr Wu, was taken into custody at a house in the Ramkhamhaeng area of Saphan Sung district, police said on Saturday. Thai authorities said the network circulated over 500 million yuan through 133 accounts.
Police allege Mr Wu was part of a loan-sharking gang that recruited people to open bank accounts used to launder money. Officers also accused him of arranging visas for members of transnational criminal groups facing other money-laundering charges.
Chinese authorities had identified Mr Wu and issued an arrest warrant before he fled to Thailand. Thai investigators said they had to track him for more than three years while he allegedly used forged documents and changed his vehicle colour and licence plates to avoid detection.
Mr Wu was charged with overstaying his visa. His Thai visa had expired three years and eight months earlier. Police said he would be extradited to China.
He remains in custody following the arrest in Bangkok, charged over the visa offence, with extradition proceedings to China underway.
