Three bodies found after Clermont-Ferrand building fire, possible criminal origin
A 21-year-old man is in custody as a fourth person remains missing.
Three bodies were found in the rubble after an apartment building burned in Clermont-Ferrand, with prosecutors pointing to a possible criminal origin.
The fire broke out overnight from Thursday to Friday at impasse Perrier, near the Place de la Victoire. It destroyed the roof and the stairwell, and several floors collapsed.
Searches continued through the night until about 1 a.m. on Saturday, when three victims were discovered between 7.30 p.m. and 1 a.m. A fourth person was not found, and firefighters resumed their operation at daybreak.
Rescuers used a cynotech team once the scene was stabilized, with a Malinois dog lowered into the building using a winch to locate two bodies. Police technical and scientific experts then took over to extract the victims, an operation that lasted for several hours.
Later, a third body was found at around 1 a.m. Fire investigators said the first findings they conducted left room for a possible criminal origin for the blaze. A 21-year-old man was arrested on Friday and placed in police custody as an investigation was opened.
The case remains under investigation, with the suspect held in custody and efforts continuing to find the fourth missing person.
