Slovenian police have concluded a two-day operation following the investigation of several violent criminal offences and a search for a dangerous, armed suspect in the wider Uršna sela area. At a press conference on 12 July 2026, officials from the Novo Mesto Police Directorate said the operation followed events reported on Friday evening, 10 July. Police stated that a 41-year-old Croatian national allegedly committed armed criminal offences in the areas of Gotenica, Kočevje and Črnomelj before fleeing towards Uršna sela. During the escape, police said the suspect allegedly fired at police officers, assaulted two officers, and took their service weapons and mobile phones. The search involved police officers, criminal investigators, the Special and Specialised Police Unit, police dog handlers, drone operators and a police helicopter. Police said the suspect was located on Saturday afternoon, 11 July, in a house in Uršna sela, where he was reportedly holding a resident hostage. They stated that the hostage was safely rescued, after which another shooting occurred. Officers from the Special Police Unit then entered the building, where the perpetrator was found dead. Officials said the circumstances of the incident and the motive for the criminal offences remain under investigation. They added that the National Forensic Laboratory and Croatian security authorities are also taking part in the investigation. The Deputy Director General of the Police, Donald Rus, said the threat to the public had been eliminated and that no police officer was injured during the operation. He said police worked under exceptionally dangerous conditions in difficult terrain while confronting an extremely violent suspect, and noted that cooperation with Croatian security authorities was carried out throughout the operation. The police directorate said it thanked local residents for their responsible conduct and cooperation, as well as officers for their work during the operation.
