€3 million Bugatti Chiron stolen near Zagreb, recovered in Austria
A 36-year-old man was arrested after the car was found at a petrol station in Styria.
A Bugatti Chiron worth around €3 million, owned by Croatian entrepreneur Mate Rimac, was stolen near Zagreb and recovered in Austria less than a day later.
A 36-year-old Croatian national was arrested after the car was located at a petrol station near Seiersberg in Austria’s Styria province, shortly after 7pm on Wednesday.
Austrian police said the suspect drove the Bugatti from Croatia through Slovenia and into Austria via the Spielfeld border crossing. Police forces in all three countries joined the search.
Rimac explained the theft in a video posted on social media, saying the car was stolen and then returned to him. He said he had routinely left keys inside his vehicles, including the Bugatti Chiron and his Rimac Nevera, for years without incident.
Rimac said the Chiron was parked outside on the company’s campus, where the exterior area is accessible, while entry to the factory requires an access card. He said the car was taken after the suspect allegedly entered the premises and drove away.
Rimac said the disappearance was not noticed at first because colleagues and friends regularly use the vehicle. It came to light after someone reported seeing a person driving the car and suspecting it was stolen. Rimac contacted police when his team checked the car’s telemetry data, which provided information including its location. The tracking showed the vehicle heading towards Slovenia.
Rimac said he then set off in his Porsche 911 to try to catch up with the Chiron, but the car continued across the border. Austrian police ultimately found it at the petrol station.
The operation ended with the arrest of the suspect, with the Bugatti recovered in Austria.
