Two Croatian nationals accused of brutal murder of 76-year-old man in Laško
Police say the suspects were arrested in Germany under a European arrest warrant.
Police in Slovenia have presented details of an investigation into the death of a 76-year-old man in Laško, which occurred in July 2026.
Investigators said a woman reported on 25 July 2026 that her husband was not answering his phone. Officers later found the man dead in his home, and circumstances at the scene indicated a violent death. A post-mortem examination determined he had died a few days before he was reported missing.
According to police, their review of the crime scene, CCTV footage and information gathered during the investigation identified two suspects: a 31-year-old Croatian man and a 29-year-old Croatian woman. Police said the pair had been watching the house on 19 July, entered it after the victim drove them away, and returned the following evening. They allegedly broke into the home, beat the man, tied him up, and demanded money or valuables.
Police allege the victim was then murdered in a particularly brutal manner and that the suspects fled Slovenia.
On 17 August 2026, police filed a criminal complaint against both suspects on suspicion of murder. On 8 September, the Celje District Court issued an international arrest warrant and a European arrest warrant. The suspects were arrested in Germany near the border with the Netherlands, and proceedings are currently underway for their handover to Slovenia.
Police said the 31-year-old suspect had previously been charged with and convicted of various criminal offences, including violent burglaries, while the female suspect had previously been investigated for property offences.
Investigators said around 20 criminal police officers worked on the case, with assistance from forensic experts at the National Forensic Laboratory and other institutions and companies. Police reported reviewing dozens of hours of CCTV footage, conducting numerous interviews, and collecting evidence to focus the investigation on the two suspects.
