Police seize 5.2 kg of cocaine in Crotone, arrest 70-year-old
Carabinieri found the drugs hidden in the car’s central gearbox panel during a traffic stop.
Carabinieri in Crotone arrested Francesco Messineo, 70, from San Luca, after seizing 5.2 kilograms of cocaine during a road check.
The operation followed an ordinary traffic control. Officers noticed the man acting nervously without a clear reason, then searched him and the vehicle.
Inside the car, the cocaine was hidden in the central gearbox panel. Police recovered five blocks of cocaine with a total weight of 5.2 kg, described as ready to be put on the market.
Messineo was taken through the formalities of the case and transferred to Crotone prison. The investigation was coordinated by the Procura della Repubblica in Crotone, led by prosecutor Domenico Guarascio.
The seizure was linked to established drug routes between the Crotone area and San Luca, with the case also tied to prior investigations and court findings involving connections described between groups in the area and those linked to the Locride. The probe continues with maximum restraint from investigators.
