The Cyprus National Addictions Authority (NAAC) has issued a public warning after laboratory tests found six different new cannabinoids in products seized from a shop selling CBD and related items. NAAC said the items were discovered during an inspection carried out with Cyprus police, the Pharmaceutical Services and the Health Services. The seized goods included e-cigarette liquids, cigarettes containing plant material and other herbal products. Laboratory analysis revealed the presence of new cannabinoids, with six different cannabinoids detected in a single e-cigarette liquid. The authority said it is especially concerned about substances appearing in products sold as low-risk, despite potentially containing powerful psychoactive cannabinoids that consumers may not realize are inside. NAAC warned that many of these substances have insufficiently studied effects on humans, and that the effects of the specific mixture found remain unknown. The authority cited possible risks including rapid heartbeat, severe drowsiness, confusion, anxiety or panic, and in serious cases, poisoning or psychotic symptoms. “ The fact that a product is sold in a shop does not guarantee its safety. Its appearance, smell or name are not enough to determine what it contains,” NAAC said. The public was advised to avoid products of unknown composition and to stop using any product suspected of containing such substances. NAAC also urged people not to combine them with alcohol or other substances and not to drive after using them, and to keep them away from children. It said anyone who feels unwell should seek medical assistance, and that healthcare professionals should be told which product was used. NAAC added that anyone who sees a person losing consciousness, having breathing difficulties or suffering seizures should call an ambulance immediately and not leave the person alone.
