Daniel Kinahan, 49, will vehemently defend the case against him and plans to seek bail, his solicitor said after he appeared in Dublin. Kinahan appeared before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin on Monday, accused of directing the activities of a criminal organisation between 18 October 2015 and 6 April 2017. His solicitor, Darragh Mackin of Phoenix Law in Belfast, said the defence is looking to make progress and hopes for a trial in the early part of next year. He said the timetable must account for expert examination of digital evidence. Mackin also said the defence is seeking full disclosure in relation to two other investigations that Kinahan was acquitted of in Spain and Dubai. During the hearing, Mackin said papers would be lodged and an application for bail would be made through the High Court. Prosecution barrister Dominic McGinn SC said Kinahan was extradited in August on a single charge, and described a complex factual matrix behind it. He said the statement of fact runs to 189 pages and will take weeks to prepare. Kinahan was arrested in the UAE on 15 April after an Irish court issued an arrest warrant, carried out under a bilateral extradition agreement. He was transported to Ireland on an Irish government jet in August and taken by high-speed Garda escort to the Dublin court where he was charged. Kinahan was remanded into custody and will appear again on 21 December.
