Police in Dečane arrested a man suspected of killing Arljinda Zekaj, Kosovo police confirmed. Albert Siljaj was detained at around 23:40 on the night of the arrest, after authorities carried out multiple search activities in the area. Siljaj was accused of killing Zekaj on 25 October in Vitomirica near Peć, shortly after she returned from a police station where she reported domestic violence. According to initial police information, Zekaj was killed with blows from a hard object. Zekaj had gone to the police station in Peć around 19:00 on Sunday to report violence in her family. After being interviewed, she returned home to Vitomirica. Later, around 21:10, police were notified that she had been killed. Kosovo police said the suspect had been on the run since Sunday, 25 October, and the arrest followed a multi-day search. The case also drew attention to Zekaj’s earlier reports and requests for protection. Media in Pristina reported that Zekaj had contacted police on 22 October after a court custody decision was not being followed. Police officers then found her former brother-in-law’s mother and the man’s two children in the home, which Zekaj said had been against her will. The same reports say she also told police that Siljaj had threatened her with murder. After the killing, questions were raised about the handling of her reports by police, prosecutors and other institutions. Zekaj was buried on 27 October in Radavc near Peć. Siljaj remains under arrest as investigations continue.
