An Australian lawmaker, Helen Haines, lost both legs after a driver allegedly ran her over twice outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Her husband Phil Haines said doctors amputated her left leg, then later her right leg as well. He said she is in stable condition. Police identified the alleged attacker as Brendan Nugent, 43, who drove a Toyota Land Cruiser and struck Haines in the attack on Monday. The police say Nugent then deliberately hit her again. Nugent was arrested and faced a fast legal process. In Tuesday’s court appearance, prosecutors charged him with dangerous driving, intentionally causing serious injury, and intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to a public official. Those charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Later, additional charges were added relating to cannabis cultivation and possession, according to court documents reported by Reuters. The case also remains under investigation, with police still working to determine the motive. The hearing was adjourned to 4 February. Nugent was briefly brought before the court again on Wednesday.
