The Department of State Services (DSS) arrested fugitive Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina in Karsana, Abuja, after six years evading justice. DSS operatives tracked Maina after intelligence indicated he had returned to Nigeria, then arrested him in the Karsana area before handing him over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Maina has been on the run since 2020. He was prosecuted by the EFCC on a three-count charge of money laundering and conspiracy, but he jumped bail and fled the country. His trial continued in his absence. In 2021, Justice Okon Abang convicted Maina and sentenced him to 14 years in prison. The court ordered that he be arrested wherever found in Nigeria and remanded in a correctional centre to serve his sentence, with instructions that the Federal Government take lawful steps to secure his extradition if he was located abroad. Security sources said the handover to EFCC would support enforcement of the court’s judgment and ensure Maina serves his prison term. Maina’s father, Abdulrasheed Maina, previously evaded justice in Dubai and then in Niamey after being accused of siphoning millions of dollars meant for pension enrollment. Abdulrasheed Maina was later extradited to Abuja, tried, and in November 2021 sentenced to eight years for bank fraud and money laundering, before being released in February 2025. Maina is now in DSS custody after his arrest and has been handed to EFCC to move forward with the enforcement of the 14-year sentence.
