Eight people were arrested during police checks at the Karaiskakis stadium in Nea Phalira as Olympiacos played Kalamata on Sunday, Oct. 25, according to Greek police. Officers said six of those arrested were found with small amounts of drugs, one man was carrying a laser device, and another was spotted on closed-circuit video using handheld fireworks during the match. Police carried out the operation to prevent violence in sports venues, with checks both outside the stadium before kick-off and through the arena’s surveillance cameras. During exterior checks, officers arrested six men, aged 22, 29, 34, 35 and 52, after finding small amounts of drugs. A 18-year-old was also arrested and a laser device, described as a high intensity beam light source, was found in his possession. A 34-year-old was arrested after refusing a legal police check. Through the closed-circuit surveillance system, officers identified and arrested a 27-year-old who allegedly used handheld fireworks during the game. Police seized a naval flare type firework and a small amount of cannabis from him. In total, eight arrests were made, and police said case files were compiled for charges including disobedience, breaches of laws on drugs, breaches related to flares and pyrotechnics, and breaches of rules on violence in sports areas. The case files were submitted to the competent prosecutor.
