Suspect arrested in Viljandi after 77-year-old found in car trunk
Court ordered two-month pre-trial detention as police continue the investigation.
A 48-year-old man was arrested after police found the body of a missing 77-year-old woman in the trunk of a car in Viljandi County’s Mustivere village.
The court ordered the suspect held in pre-trial detention for up to two months. Prosecutors said the detention was needed to prevent him from committing further offences, and the court agreed.
The woman, Ilme, had gone missing from Mustivere in Viljandi Parish. She did not return home on Wednesday, and her relatives could not reach her. Her phone was left at home, and her car was missing.
Police started searches immediately after relatives reported her missing. The area around the home was checked using a service dog and a drone. Water rescue teams and divers also searched a nearby pond. Officers collected information about the woman’s possible movements and contacts and reviewed security camera footage in the area.
On Thursday evening, a local resident told police they had spotted the missing car in Viljandi. Police located the vehicle at an apartment building and found the woman’s body inside the trunk, showing signs of violence.
Based on information gathered, police detained three men in Viljandi the same evening, including two aged 75 and the 48-year-old suspect. The investigation is ongoing, with the circumstances of the case still being clarified.
