Eurojust President Michael Schmid and Judge Ali Hussein Chafat, representing Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council, have signed a Working Arrangement at Eurojust’s headquarters in The Hague. The agreement is intended to support long-term cooperation between the European Union’s judicial cooperation body and authorities in the Republic of Iraq in the fight against terrorism and serious and organised crime. Under the arrangement, Eurojust and Iraqi authorities will work together through a framework for strategic cooperation. The text also provides for the exchange of information between the Agency and the Iraqi institutions involved. The signing took place at Eurojust headquarters in The Hague, where both representatives agreed on the basis for enhanced judicial cooperation on cross-border crime matters. The Working Arrangement focuses on coordination at an institutional level rather than on any specific case described in the announcement.
