Ex-Air Force chief accused of graft in Qatar after Tk 276m money laundering
Shaikh Abdul Hannan arrested over alleged illegal wealth acquisition and laundering cases filed in Dhaka.
Former air chief marshal Shaikh Abdul Hannan has been arrested in Qatar in connection with graft cases accusing him of illegal wealth acquisition and money laundering.
Hannan is a suspect in two Anti-Corruption Commission cases filed on Jul 27, 2025 against him and his wife, Tahmida Begum. The ACC alleges assets of Tk 32.85 million were inconsistent with his known income, and suspicious transactions worth Tk 276.37 million were carried out through six bank accounts in his name.
The ACC claims Hannan abused power and committed criminal misconduct to acquire the assets, and concealed the money’s source through those bank transactions. The case was filed under the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
In the second case, Tahmida is accused of acquiring assets worth Tk 19.19 million beyond known income sources, with Hannan named as an accused. The ACC says it received information about suspicious transactions totalling Tk 11.82 million across 32 bank accounts under her name.
Court actions ordered during the investigation included a travel ban on Hannan, Tahmida and their son, Shaikh Labib Hannan, on May 5, 2025, followed by seizure of Hannan’s land, house and three flats, and freezing of six of his bank accounts. On May 24, a total of 38 bank accounts in the names of Hannan, Tahmida and their son were frozen. On Nov 11, the court ordered seizure of two flats held by Hannan associate Sanjida Akhter and freezing of 10 bank accounts.
The ACC also sought verification of Hannan’s businesses and assets abroad, including in Qatar and Dubai, and demanded information about assets in his children’s names in Canada. Further orders included seizure of income tax documents for Hannan and Tahmida on Mar 30 and attachment of 34 percent of land in Bagerhat’s Kachua Upazila, with the deed value stated as Tk 1.76 million.
Hannan’s arrest in Qatar was confirmed after ACC officials said the detailed arrest information would be disclosed at an upcoming press conference. He remains an accused under the ACC cases filed in Dhaka.
