Former Air Chief Marshal Shaikh Abdul Hannan was arrested in Qatar over graft allegations involving illegal wealth acquisition and money laundering, the Anti-Corruption Commission said. The ACC filed two cases against Hannan and his wife, Tahmida Begum, on July 27, 2025. Prosecutors allege Hannan amassed Tk 32.85 million in assets inconsistent with his known income, with suspicious transactions of Tk 276.37 million run through six bank accounts in his name. The commission alleged the former air force chief abused power and engaged in criminal misconduct to acquire the assets. It also accused him of concealing the source of the money through those bank transactions, and lodged the case under the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. In the second case, Tahmida was accused of acquiring assets worth Tk 19.19 million beyond known income sources, with the ACC alleging she acted with Hannan’s help. The ACC cited suspicious transactions of Tk 11.82 million across 32 bank accounts under her name. Investigators said they also obtained information about Hannan’s businesses and assets abroad, including Qatar and Dubai. They sought details of assets held by his children in Canada for verification in the investigation. Before the arrest, the court blocked travel for Hannan, his wife and their son, Shaikh Labib Hannan, on May 5, 2025, and later ordered seizure and freezing measures on the ACC’s petitions. Those included seizing Hannan’s land, house and three flats, freezing six bank accounts, freezing a total of 38 accounts across Hannan, his wife and son, and later seizing two flats linked to an associate, Sanjida Akhter, and freezing 10 more accounts. The court also ordered the attachment of 34% of land in Bagerhat’s Kachua Upazila in Hannan’s name on Sept 20, with a deed value of Tk 1.76 million. Hannan’s arrest means the graft investigation will continue, with ACC officials saying the arrest details would be disclosed at an upcoming press conference.
