Ex-husband arrested after woman drowned in Erba pool
Patrizia Monteleone died in September, and police suspect the ex-husband of homicide.
Patrizia Monteleone died after being found drowned in the swimming pool at her home in Erba, in Italy’s Como area. Police say she was allegedly killed by her ex-husband, Carmine Civitillo.
The woman’s death was discovered after an incident on 27 September. She was reported to have fallen into the pool from a wheelchair, but investigators reopened the case when they found strong doubts about how she could have reached the water alone.
Civitillo, 76, was later reached by an order of precautionary custody. He was arrested in Benevento, where he had moved after Monteleone’s death, with the house reportedly under seizure.
Investigators say the alleged crime happened that morning while Monteleone was alone at home. Police accuse Civitillo of preventing her from calling out and then taking her to the edge of the pool, pushing her onto the wheelchair before she was thrown into the water.
Civitillo initially told responders and carabinieri that he found his ex-wife already dead in the pool, presenting it as an accident. That account is now challenged by technical-scientific findings, medico-legal checks, analyses of surveillance systems, phone intercepts, and statements collected during the investigation.
Prosecutors have asked for the custody measure through the Benevento office, with the request backed by additional elements gathered through on-site inspections and technical experiments by the carabinieri and consultants appointed by the public prosecutor.
Civitillo is currently in custody, pending further legal steps as the investigation continues under the homicide hypothesis.
