A 30-year-old was arrested in Livorno after pretending to be a carabinieri marshal and taking jewellery from a 66-year-old woman, worth about 10,000 euros. Police said the scam played out after the suspect contacted the victim by phone with false claims that her husband was involved in a theft at a jeweller, triggering fears of legal trouble if she did not hand over valuables. The woman was then approached at her home between late morning and the early afternoon. The man arrived and identified himself as a “maresciallo dei carabinieri”. She had already placed the jewellery on a table, but when she hesitated, the fake officer grabbed the items and ran. Investigators from the police’s special unit began tracing him after the report of multiple fraud attempts across the city. The victim gave a detailed account of his movements, and police used city surveillance cameras to reconstruct his route from the train station to the woman’s address. By cross-checking information, officers identified a matching suspect and found him a short time later at the train station with the stolen jewellery in his possession. He was arrested and taken into custody, and the jewellery was returned to the owner. This was the second arrest in four days by the same police unit in cases involving travellers who arrive in Livorno to scam people, often elderly, with the help of phone contacts acting from a distance.
