Police arrest 3 fake carabinieri in Arezzo elderly gold scam
Suspects took about 16,000 euros in gold and cash, triggering urgent 112 alerts.
Arezzo police arrested three men pretending to be Carabinieri after elderly victims were tricked into handing over gold and cash.
The scam targeted older residents across the province, with the suspects allegedly using phone calls and doorstep checks to pressure victims into giving up valuables.
In the first episode, a 27-year-old man contacted an 81-year-old woman from the Valtiberina area, claiming her husband’s car had been spotted near a jeweller where a robbery had taken place. Shortly after, the fake officer returned to her home to “compare” the gold and cash allegedly stolen, and she handed over jewellery worth about 16,000 euros and 1,500 euros in cash.
The woman then called the Carabinieri. Officers traced the described car and intercepted a vehicle linked to the scam, identifying the driver at the wheel. The man was found with the full stolen items and was arrested for aggravated fraud. After court validation, he was taken to Campania under house arrest.
In a second episode, a 39-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man contacted a 75-year-old woman from Umbria who lived in Cortona. They allegedly told her they needed to check the gold and cash she had at home against what they claimed had been stolen in a burglary. The victim prepared gold jewellery, including an “all-gold” watch, and about 100 euros in cash, then handed the items to the fake Carabinieri who arrived at her home.
Tourists noticed a car leaving Cortona and alerted the 112 emergency number. Carabinieri tracked down the vehicle on provincial road 34. Searches allowed officers to recover the stolen items and arrest the pair for aggravated fraud.
Investigators in Arezzo are carrying out further checks to see whether the three suspects were involved in other similar frauds in the previous days.
