Carabinieri in Priolo Gargallo arrested two people in the act for an attempted aggravated fraud targeting an 83-year-old woman. Officers said a 38-year-old man and his 43-year-old partner, both with prior records for crimes against people and property, were detained after a telephone scam that began on Friday afternoon. The woman was contacted by someone posing as a Carabinieri officer. The caller claimed a robbery had just been carried out at a jewellery shop using the car belonging to the woman’s son, and ordered her to check the jewellery she had at home to rule out whether it was linked to the robbery. The 83-year-old became suspicious and immediately contacted her son and the Carabinieri. Patrol officers from the Priolo Gargallo station, already doing routine area checks, rushed to her home. They found the alleged fraudster inside the apartment and arrested her, while the partner was stopped outside, waiting in a car. The suspects were taken to the remand facilities in Catania “Piazza Lanza” and Siracusa “Cavadonna.” The Carabinieri said the fraud scheme remains widespread and urged people not to let strangers into their homes, not to hand over money to anyone, and to contact 112 or their nearest Carabinieri station without delay when in doubt.
