Police detain five in Asturias narcotics and money-laundering operation
Two of the arrested are Police National officers, investigated by Internal Affairs.
Five people were detained in Asturias over alleged drug trafficking and money laundering, including two officers of the Policía Nacional.
The operation involved raids on homes in Avilés and Castrillón, carried out by the GOES, the Police National high-risk intervention units. The investigation had been run by Internal Affairs for more than a year, tracking alleged moves of the network since last year.
Internal Affairs said four men and one woman were arrested, with the woman described as the owner of a business in Castrillón. One officer is assigned at the Asturias Airport and the other works in Galicia.
Police attributed to both arrested officers, provisionally and pending a judge’s decision, crimes related to trafficking drugs and laundering money. The investigation also points to attempts to use legal businesses to wash drug profits, and to the alleged creation of false passports to help the structure move across Spain.
The network is described as having international reach for distributing cocaine, with links outside Asturias. Investigators add that some detainees could be connected to a cartel linked to members of La Santa, a Dominican drug trafficking group present in the region.
The five detainees were taken to the Superior Police Headquarters in Asturias in Buenavista, Oviedo, and will be brought before the examining court in Avilés. The case is now under judicial instruction.
