A foreign national is being held in a cell at the PSP police station in Leiria for several days while waiting for extradition, after a judge ordered his expulsion from Portugal. His stay at PSP Leiria is linked to a lack of places at the Centro de Instalação Temporária (CIT) in Porto, the only centre in the country that accommodates foreigners while they wait to return to their country of origin or for a decision on international protection. The man was detained in early October during a police action. Authorities later confirmed he was in Portugal illegally. After being taken to court, the judge ordered extradition. In normal circumstances, he would have been transferred to the CIT in Porto, which is described as permanently overcrowded. A source said the state was unable to accommodate the situation, and without available centres the only option was to keep him detained in a PSP cell in Leiria. The Jornal de Leiria reports it is awaiting a response to questions sent to the PSP district command. He remains in custody at PSP Leiria as the extradition and expulsion process continues.
