Former Belgrade communal police chief arrested after Savamala testimony
Nikola Ristić is accused of breaching data secrecy and is held in custody.
Nikola Ristić, the former chief of Belgrade’s communal police, was arrested the same day his interview about the 10-year-old Savamala demolition was published, and a court ordered him into custody.
Ristić has been in pre-trial detention since 24 October, the day before snap parliamentary elections. Nova.rs reports the case was opened by the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office, after which the Higher Court in Belgrade set detention following his hearing.
He is accused of violating the Law on Secrecy of Information, by making information available that carries the labels “interno” or “poverljivo”, internal or confidential. He is also suspected of a more serious form of the offence committed for gain.
In the interview, Ristić claimed he took part in the unlawful Savamala demolition and alleged that then mayor Siniša Mali organized it. He also named others he linked to the event, including the head of the Belgrade police Veselin Milić, the co-owner of Milenijum tim Ivan Bošnjak, and a group led by Veljko Belivuk. Only Milenijum tim publicly denied the claims, saying Ristić previously tried to extort money from them.
The latest status is that Ristić remains in detention after the court ordered pre-trial custody.
