Four detained for eight days after illegal entry and stay in Cyprus
A Nicosia District Court ordered custody as police investigate suspected migrant smuggling.
Police in Cyprus detained four people for eight days after arresting them over alleged help with the illegal entry, transit and stay of individuals in the Republic of Cyprus.
The suspects were brought before the Nicosia District Court after a court issued the eight-day detention order on October 28. The Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department continued its inquiries.
Police said the group includes people aged 19 and 22, and two aged 23. On the morning of October 27 in Nicosia, a police officer noticed individuals considered suspicious and called the Aliens and Immigration Unit and the Nicosia Police Directorate to the scene.
Officers located seven people in total. They were deemed to have illegally entered the territory of the Republic of Cyprus in the occupied areas, before attempting to enter the free areas illegally by crossing the Green Line.
Investigations established that four of the seven were in Cyprus under asylum status. Evidence also indicates they are allegedly involved in a migrant-smuggling case.
The four suspects were arrested under court warrants and placed in custody ahead of the court appearance. The remaining three people were transferred to the Pournara First Reception Center.
The case remains under investigation, with police inquiries continuing after the suspects’ eight-day detention order.
