Four detained in Vila Real over suspected forest fires from burn-offs
Police say three men aged 73 to 77 and a 59-year-old woman were arrested Monday.
Four people were detained in the Vila Real district on Monday over suspected forest fires, after authorised burn-offs allegedly got out of control.
The GNR said the arrests were made following an investigation that linked the incidents to burning permits that became uncontrolled. Three of those detained are men in their seventies, and one is a 59-year-old woman.
A 74-year-old man was detained in Vila Pouca de Aguiar. A 73-year-old was arrested in Ribeira de Pena. A 77-year-old was detained in Alijó, while the 59-year-old woman was arrested in Vila Real.
The GNR also reported that hot weather helped fuel several fire outbreaks across the district that same Monday. Officials urged people to take care even when burns are authorised, including checking the day’s weather conditions and having water or a hose ready.
The investigation is ongoing.
