Police in Waterford are investigating after four members of the same family were killed in an arson attack at a home on Birch Avenue. Kim English, Philip English and two of their children, nine-year-old Jayden and 12-year-old Callum, died after their house was set on fire on Tuesday, with two other children badly injured. Gardaí said the investigation is “intense in nature and very active”. “Multiple searches” were carried out on Tuesday evening at several premises in Waterford, and officers seized a number of vehicles and electronic devices for technical examination. The blaze began in the early hours of Tuesday, when six members of the English family were sleeping inside the two-storey house. Gardaí believe an incendiary device, likely a petrol bomb, was used deliberately. Firefighters, ambulance staff and gardaí responded to the scene shortly after 05:13, removing casualties from the property before the fire was extinguished and handing the scene to police. Detectives believe the attack is linked to organised crime and drugs-related intimidation, according to RTÉ. On Wednesday, Ch Supt Anthony Pettit appealed to anyone in the community who knows the person or persons responsible to contact investigators. He said people may have information about who carried out the attack, which Gardaí have described as a “multiple murder and arson attack”. Officers are asking anyone who was in the vicinity of the Birchwood housing estate between 04:30 and 05:30 on Tuesday morning to come forward. The investigation remains ongoing, with police continuing technical examinations of seized vehicles and electronic devices.
