France police arrest 135 as protesters clash in multiple cities
About 410,000 demonstrators returned for a second weekend, police said.
French police have arrested 135 people as cost of living protesters clashed with officers in multiple cities across France.
Around 410,000 demonstrators took to the streets on Saturday for a second consecutive weekend, while about 70,000 police officers were deployed nationwide to prevent a repeat of last week’s rioting and looting.
Clashes flared as officers used batons, fired tear gas canisters, and deployed water cannons in some locations. In Paris, viral videos showed police preventing protesters’ attempt to erect a barricade at Porte de Vincennes.
The march by some demonstrators ended peacefully, but a remaining group, described as mostly young people dressed in black, threw objects at police. In Nice, authorities deployed the largest number of police officers in the city’s history for the protest.
Elsewhere, police faced attempts to breach barriers. In Montpellier, protesters tried to force their way through a police barricade. In Clermont-Ferrand, police fired a crowd-control grenade into the air, which was said to have fallen onto a protester who reportedly lost several fingers.
In Marseille, protesters set barricades on fire. In Bordeaux, demonstrators ripped boards from a shop. Police also fired tear gas canisters at protesters in Lyon, Lille, Toulouse, and Nantes.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez told French media on BFM TV that almost 1,000 people have been arrested since the demonstrations began last week, adding that the figure “will increase.”
The latest status is that 135 people have been arrested, while Interior Minister Nuñez said more arrests are expected as the unrest continues.
