France arrests over 1,800 after violent protests, Macron to speak tonight
Paris alone took 855 arrests as fires and attacks hit buildings across the country.
More than 1,800 people were arrested in France after violent groups clashed with officers and looted shops during Saturday protests, with President Emmanuel Macron set to address the nation at 8:00 p.m.
French authorities said masked groups set fires and attacked public buildings, including city hall buildings, in several cities. Macron will hold an emergency meeting with senior state officials this afternoon before the address.
In Paris, police announced 855 arrests in the region of the French capital alone. Across France, about 550,000 people joined the demonstrations, organizers said the figure was about 800,000.
Police and emergency services reported more than 500 officers, gendarmes, and firefighters were injured. One person died of a heart attack, Paris police said, without providing details.
Around Paris’s Place de la République, protesters left uprooted cobblestones, smashed shop windows, and shards of glass. Clashes with riot police continued into the evening, with tear gas and water cannons used against the crowds.
Hundreds of thousands of students had been protesting in recent weeks over a lack of teachers and dilapidated school facilities in French high schools. They were joined by union members and other groups, including the “Yellow Vests” movement.
As of the latest updates, those arrested were in police custody while authorities prepared Macron’s emergency meeting and statement.
