France’s interior minister said police detained more than 1,800 people during protests across the country, after clashes broke out as tens of thousands marched in Paris. The minister announced the total on Saturday, with Paris police reporting 855 arrests during the demonstrations there. Rioting and confrontations between protesters and police were reported in parts of the capital. Police said masked people carried out “targeted violent acts” in cities including Paris, Marseille, Rennes, Toulouse and Angers. During Saturday’s protests, one protester died after suffering cardiac and breathing arrest. Police later said the death was not linked to police intervention or to fighting at the edge of the demonstrations. Tensions rose in Paris after riot police used tear gas around the Republic Square area before the permitted march even began. There were also major incidents elsewhere. In Limoges, the historic city hall building was engulfed in flames, causing serious damage. The fire led to the collapse of the 143-year-old building’s bell tower and roof, after reports that masked protesters set a police vehicle on fire, broke windows and entered the building. Local politics quickly turned on how security operations were handled. France’s Greens leader Marine Tondelier demanded the interior minister’s resignation, calling the response a “complete disaster.” At the latest, police reported deaths during the protests and arrests during the unrest. No charges or court steps were described in the report.
