A French court will decide next month whether former University of Manitoba law dean Jonathan Black-Branch will be extradited to Canada to face a fraud charge. Black-Branch is accused in Canada of fraud over $5,000, after a Canada-wide arrest warrant was issued. He was arrested in April in a municipality west of Paris and later appeared in the Investigating Chamber of the Versailles Court of Appeal, opposing the extradition. The former dean, who was also disbarred, is accused of misusing more than $600,000 from the university. Prosecutors say the money was used to pay his bills, buy pricey meals at a members-only club, and pay for education at Ivy League schools. Black-Branch was hired as the Winnipeg university’s law dean in 2016 but left the post in 2020 and moved to Europe. His extradition case is set to be resolved after the court’s next-month decision in Versailles.
