France to decide extradition of ex-Manitoba law dean in $600,000 fraud
Jonathan Black-Branch opposes the move in the Versailles Court of Appeal.
A former University of Manitoba law dean, Jonathan Black-Branch, is fighting extradition from France after being arrested there over an alleged fraud worth more than $600,000.
Black-Branch is expected to learn next month whether he will be extradited following a court hearing at the Investigating Chamber of the Versailles Court of Appeal. The disbarred lawyer was arrested in April in a municipality west of Paris after a Canada-wide arrest warrant was issued for fraud over $5,000.
He is accused of misusing more than $600,000 from the university. Prosecutors say the money was used to pay his bills, buy pricey meals at a members-only club, and fund his education at Ivy League schools. Black-Branch was hired as the Winnipeg university’s law dean in 2016 but left the role in 2020 and moved to Europe.
Black-Branch remains in the extradition process after opposing the request in court, with a decision expected next month.
