Paris and Marseille police brace for unrest as schools reopen
French police arrested 779 people during Halloween protests, and expect more demonstrations.
French police are on alert for fresh unrest as schools reopen after the autumn break, with some groups calling for blockades.
Authorities said violence over rising living costs was less severe than previous weekends after mass protests, but police still expect new demonstrations from Monday as high schools return.
During Halloween protests, police arrested 779 people across France. That compares with 2,628 arrested on October 17 and 1,314 the previous weekend, with around 70,000 officers deployed nationwide.
In Paris, rioters attacked police at the end of Saturday’s march on the city’s eastern edge, injuring three officers and setting a car ablaze. Elsewhere in the capital, masked groups hurled fireworks at officers near a viewpoint across from the Eiffel Tower, prompting repeated police charges and visitors to flee the area.
French police and officials also cited damage in other cities. In Paris and Marseille, police said a handful of shops were targeted, with no major damage reported.
Germany also saw separate unrest following protests, after crowds of more than 100,000 mostly young people marched peacefully before violence at night. In Frankfurt, rioters attacked police downtown and looted stores, injuring more than 100 officers and leading to 54 detentions for people aged 13 to 29.
French authorities are now preparing for more disruptions ahead of Thursday’s general strike on trains and public services, alongside protests by students and labour unions demanding higher wages and other measures.
Police in France said Saturday’s events included a “return to republican order”, but the situation was not perfect. The latest status is that police expect new demonstrations as schools reopen, with the situation under active police preparation.
