French authorities have arrested around 2,000 people over violence during nationwide protests in France, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on Sunday. Nunez reported the figure was provisional, posting it on X. He said the unrest included clashes, attacks on public buildings and looting, blamed on several thousand far left individuals. He said those people were joined by criminals who vandalized and looted shops in several cities. The minister added that 600 police officers, gendarmes and firefighters were injured, also described as provisional. Macron’s government put the scale of damage at “considerable.” Nunez said several hundred businesses had been targeted. The Federation of Commerce and Distribution warned losses could reach hundreds of millions of euros and estimated that 1,500 shops were vandalized. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu called on prosecutors to seek pretrial detention for those arrested and is due to chair an interministerial crisis meeting on Sunday to address the fallout. Macron is also scheduled to speak on television. According to the Interior Ministry, 550,000 people took part in demonstrations across France, while organisers put the turnout above 800,000. In Paris, the march from Place de la Republique to Place de Clichy drew 110,000 people. Nunez did not set out further charges or court outcomes in his remarks, and the arrests and injury counts remain provisional.
